Christian Resistance To Tyranny
by: DW

There are clearly examples of passive resistance to ungodly rulers in the Bible. For example, the Hebrew midwives are commended by God for lying to Pharoah.

Likewise, Rahab who deceived her neighbors regarding the Hebrew spies. She became a hero of the faith and likely progenitor of Christ.

However, note that these acts of resistance are passive rather than active. Active rebellion against a tyrant may only be led by a duly ordained officer of church or state.

I believe that this is one of the few things that the American founding fathers got right. The war against Britain was led by the duly elected officers of the colonies. It was not an uprising of the people against established authority such as occurred in the French Revolution a few years later.

Unfortunately, their official justification for the rebellion was based on natural law, as expressed in the Declaration of Independence. They neglected the covenant foundation for government modeled by most of the colonial constitutions. See our Declaration of Dependence On God under the "Covenant Victory" link.
