It doesn't matter how you voted. The important thing is that we begin to discuss this question. It is a vitally important question because it lies at the heart of our relationship to God as a nation and as a culture.
Someone has observed that we can't really understand an event until at least 100 years have transpired. Only the perspective of time can provide true understanding of the past. A corollary is that we understand least the historical moment in which we are now living.
Recent books like "The Real Lincoln" have shown that to be true of the Civil War era. Most of what we have been taught about Lincoln and the Civil War in our public school text books is the exact opposite of reality.
It may be equally true of the founding era. The time has come for Christians to revisit the period with new eyes. At the very least we must reopen the discussion.
If we neglect this task, the old saw will certainly be true of us: "those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it." May this forum contribute in some small way to making sure that doesn't happen to us.
